3D models and CAD files are among the largest and most complex files that professionals share. An architectural model can be 500MB. A game asset pack can hit 2GB. A mechanical assembly with all its parts can exceed 1GB. Here is how to share them without the usual headaches.
Common 3D File Formats
- OBJ - universal 3D mesh format. Works with almost every 3D application
- STL - standard for 3D printing. Geometry only, no color or texture data
- STEP/STP - precision CAD exchange format used in manufacturing
- FBX - animation and game development standard. Supports meshes, textures, rigs and animations
- BLEND - Blender native format. Contains entire scenes with materials, lighting and physics
- DWG - AutoCAD drawings. 2D and 3D architectural and engineering plans
- GLTF/GLB - web-ready 3D format. Compact and optimized for browsers
The Sharing Challenge
3D files are difficult to share because:
- File size often exceeds email limits (25MB)
- Companion files are required: textures, materials, reference images
- Format compatibility varies between software packages
- IP protection is critical for proprietary designs
How to Share 3D Files with EasySend
- Collect all project files - model, textures, materials, reference images
- Upload everything at easysend.co (bundles under one link)
- Add a description with software version, scale units and format notes
- Enable encryption for proprietary designs
- Share the link with your client, manufacturer or collaborator
Tips for Sharing 3D Files
- Include textures - OBJ files need their MTL and texture files. Without them, the model renders without materials
- Note the software version in the bundle description. Version mismatches cause import failures
- Export in multiple formats if you are unsure what the recipient uses. Include OBJ (universal), STL (3D printing) and a native format
- ZIP large texture folders to reduce upload time and preserve folder structure
- Include a reference render (PNG/JPG) so the recipient can verify the model looks correct before opening
